hybrid Constraint Induced Therapy program
Research Proven Results
"Constraint-Induced Movement therapy or CI therapy is a new therapeutic approach to rehabilitation of movement after stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
CI therapy consists of a family of treatments that teach the brain to "rewire" itself following an injury to the brain.
CI therapy is based on research by Edward Taub, Ph.D. and collaborators at this institution that showed that patients can "learn" to improve movement of the weaker parts of their bodies. These therapies have significantly improved the quality of movement and the amount of use of the more-affected arm or leg for common daily living activities in most patients who have been treated.
CI therapy is the only rehabilitation technique shown to markedly change the organization of activity in the brain and remodel brain structures."(https://www.uab.edu/citherapy/)

Because food therapy is a vital tool for CIMT progress, each day, 1 hour will be dedicated to this activity. During this time, patient will be given the opportunity to snack or eat lunch while only using affected limb. Refrigerator will be provided if patient would like to bring in food. Staff member can also bring patient to local restaurant or grocery store for food field trip. Costs of food will be paid for by patient/ patient's family at the last day of program. Receipts will be saved for the purchases made.
Patient will be given homework assignments based on the days therapy activities. These assignments are not required, but patient can expect better progression with more homework activity completion.
Patient must be supported and motivated but not assisted by caretaker unless an unsafe situation arises. The idea of CIMT is to safely force the patient to use the affected limb as much as possible with as little assistance as possible. Caretaker will also be notified of homework assignments. Family/caretaker may oversee therapy program at BEST Day. Having a support system is vital to help the patient better achieve their goals.
