So you’re in your 60's (or younger!) and feel that lifting weights is NOT necessary at your age!?
Well you’d be wrong AND your brain can feel it!
Physiology Fact Friday presents an article from Vancouver, British Columbia which exemplifies the importance of weight-lifting for brain health.
Similar to how weight-lifting strengthens our muscles over time, these same effects are being researched in the brain. A group of women, who weight-lifted 2+ times a week, showed smaller lesion size and progression in the brain. Lesions are "gaps" that form between adjacent neurons, inhibiting synaptic communication between each other. For this particular study, the researchers were focusing on lesion inhibition on motor control areas of the brain.
Ultimately, the women who weight-lifted multiple times a week during the study had less lesion proliferation as well as a quicker, smoother gait-pattern. It just goes to show that “educated, age-conscious” weight-lifting is important throughout our entire lifespan!
